In the late 19th century, many of the homes in the area were built by Denver architect, William Lang. Many more homes were built in the 1930s and 1940s which made the neighborhood a true pre-World War II community. More recently, some of the original homes were replaced by more contemporary high-end duplexes and condominiums. It has been a challenge to preserve the historic charm of the neighborhood, but the wide, tree-lined residential streets and the amenities close by still provide affordable and convenient urban living.
Highland Square (just north of Sloan’s Lake in the West Highlands Neighborhood) provides many shops, restaurants, pubs, salons and boutiques in the area. Residents of this neighborhood will agree that their local retail market is among the best!
Sloan’s Lake is the largest lake in metro Denver (177 acres), and the park surrounding it provides excellent recreation opportunities for the neighborhood and for the many visitors from around the state. In addition to the lovely scenery and jogging paths, there is a boat dock, two large playgrounds, tennis courts, and lovely grassy areas for picnicking and bird watching. Fishing and water-skiing are other available activities. There is a yearly Dragon Boat Festival, an outdoor festival with booths and exhibits, and a race around the lake. Golfing and walking, biking, and jogging on over 650 miles of paved trails are close by.
