Erie started as a railroad hub for the coal mining industry. Founded in the 1870s by Reverend Richard Van Valkenburg, Erie now straddles both Boulder and Weld counties and has a population of about 17,000. Erie schools are managed by either the St Vrain Valley School District or Boulder Valley School District.

The North Campus of Children’s Hospital is in the Erie area. Erie Municipal Airport provides services to private-plane commuters.
