Applewood Neighborhood History
Founded in 1954, Applewood got its name when a farmer paid Myron Bunger, a landowner, with apple tree saplings, that were used to seed four types of apple trees where Applewood Glen currently sits. Myron and two water engineers, Fred and Emma Bunger, were the first to develop Applewood, or, as it was known then, Applewood Mesa. Soon after, several other contractors developed the subdivisions of Applewood Hills, Applewood Heights, Applewood Grove, Applewood Glen, Applewood View, and Applewood Knolls. All of which are now simply referred to as Applewood. The neighborhood contains mostly traditional style homes, but also has farm homes built as early as the late 1800’s and custom homes built as recent as this year.
Applewood Community and Events
Applewood is host to one of Wheat Ridge’s biggest celebrations of the year, the Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival. The two-day event includes a parade, fireworks, and carnival. Applewood is also in close proximity to the Golden Fine Arts Festival, Red Rocks amphitheater, Colorado Railroad Museum, Splash Aquatic Park, Heritage Square, Lakeside Amusement Park, and many mountain and ski resorts. For those who like the outdoors, golfing, horseback riding, hiking, and biking can be enjoyed in Applewood.
The Applewood Schools and Businesses
Applewood has some of the highest rated schools in the metro area. Parents can choose from several elementary schools: Maple Grove, Prospect Valley, Kullerstrand, Stober, and Vivian Elementary. Just across Kipling is Wheat Ridge High school, who has won 44 state titles in 11 different sports and numerous extra-curricular titles in art, band, and DECA. Although each neighborhood has an assigned school, Jefferson County residents can choose to attend any Jefferson County school.
Major businesses and employers in the area include; Molson-Coors Brewery, Applejack Liquors, WalMart, and King Soopers. You will find many boutique businesses and restaurants along Youngfield St., many of which are involved in the Applewood Business Association.
